Gifts To Make Men Happy This Year

Every year it seems that people want the latest and greatest gadgets. 10 years ago everyone wanted a home PC or DVD player. These products are just about at their end of their life-span now and the next generation of quicker and more advanced tech is taking over. If you’re looking for the best gifts for men then you’ll need to get with the times and find out what is really in vogue right now.Below are some of the most desirable products that will be on the shelves in 2010.

Micro RC Helicopter. Its difficult to see what is so advanced about a micro helicopter when compared to the old larger modules, but believe it or not they are completely different. With remote control helicopters of old, you needed to break the bank to buy one and then you worried about crashing them as they were very difficult to control. You wouldn’t even dream of an RC plane as these were even worse. The micro helicopters however can be flown by a 10 year old and in a space the size of a small bedroom. These choppers do not mix well with pets however, and cats especially will like opportunity to test their bird hunting skills.

Next Gen Smart Phone. The last decade has seen phones transform from clunky and hard to use devices to loyal companions that we use to organise our everyday life. We can now browse the internet on phones, send and receive email, play games and even find our way via GPS.That said, these additions have been around for a little while now and there are even more advanced features just around the corner. Look out for more phones incorporating mini digital projectors, night vision recorders and even telescoping lenses attachments.

Netbooks. As with all gadgets, computers are getting smaller all the time. The laptop started to get so small that people decided to call it something new, and so the netbook was born. Admittedly they do slightly different jobs, but netbooks are becoming as powerful as laptops these days and so more and more people are choosing them as their primary computer. Expect netbooks to get even smaller and more powerful in future.

The Launch Of Apple’s iPad - Should Amazon Be Worried?

Apple has, after what must have seemed like an eternity to their adherents, unveiled their much anticipated tablet computer at last. The name is confirmed as the iPad, which took some pundits by surprise – earlier guesses included iSlate, iTablet etc. – and it’s fair to say that it has had a somewhat mixed reception thus far. There is always a certain amount of polarisation where Apple is concerned and that’s pretty much the case here.

Some reviewers have suggested that it is nothing more than an oversized iPod Touch. Others are much more enthusiastic and are already suggesting that we will see the disappearance of notebooks, netbooks and the Amazon Kindle e-book reader. The proof of the pudding is in the eating of course, and this will come when the iPad actually launches in March. It is difficult to imagine that it won’t be a huge success for Apple.

At the moment, the most commonly drawn comparison seems to be with the Amazon Kindle e-book reader. The two devices are very different – so it’s not necessarily a sensible comparison to draw. However, the comparison is almost inevitable when you consider that the Kindle has been the hottest gadget on the market for some months now and was itself often given the title of “the iPod of reading”.

Of course, the Kindle is a specialised device. It performs its primary function – allowing users to read books – very well and has a few supplementary functions, a basic web browser, a dictionary, receipt of newspapers and magazines etc., which it performs, quite frankly, less well. The iPad, on the other hand, is an extremely versatile device which performs many different functions. Unlike the Kindle it has a color display, which features touch screen control functionality and incorporates an accelerometer. That means that it’s great for surfing the net, ideal for video playback, an mp3 player, an e-book reader and all of the entire library of “apps” developed for the iPod Touch will operate on it. Expect to see some pretty funky games being made available shortly after the launch proper.

So should Amazon be worried that Apple is going to kill the Kindle reader off and eat into their profits? It doesn’t seem likely. Putting the hype to one side, there is actually a pretty big price difference between the two devices. Certainly, the price of the entry level iPad at $ 499 is only $ 10 higher than the current Kindle DX price. However, the entry level model doesn’t include 3G connectivity and there is a minimum $ 15 per month fee for the Apple device, which could go as high as $ 30 depending upon the size of your downloads each month. The Kindle includes 3G connectivity - and with no monthly fee. It’s quite probable that the iPad’s appearance on the scene could produce a downward adjustment in the ticket price of the DX – but this would have happened anyway.

One of the apps that many will use on the iPad will be the “Kindle app”, which basically allows users to read Kindle books on their Pod or Pad. It may be an opportunity for Amazon to increase the size of their potential market in this area. Apple will also have its own online bookshop for iPad customers – so there may well some degree of price competition going forward. If so, it will be the consumers who benefit.

When the iPad starts shipping in March, it’s a fair bet that a lot of enthusiastic customers will be making their purchases via the Amazon website. It will probably be a very nice sales spike for them.

So – Amazon will have the potential to increase the sales of Kindle books. It will also profit very nicely in its capacity as a merchant bearing in mind that the Amazon site will be the first place that many iPad potential buyers think of when it is time to make their purchase. The price of the Kindle DX will fall, which it would have anyway, but they will continue to sell in volume and Amazon will continue to profit. It’s a clear demonstration of exactly how robust Amazon’s business model is.

Is The Que More Than An E-Book Reader?

UK based company Plastic Logic has announced its Que e-book reader which will now compete with the Amazon Kindle reader. The lightweight device, which features touch screen controls was displayed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The Que is the product of more than a decade of research and development work at Cambridge University in the UK. It’s estimated that the R&D program cost in excess of $ 200m.

The devices features 3G wireless connectivity and has a large format black and white display. It is aimed at “mobile professionals” and is quite a bit more expensive than the Kindle.

There are two different models available. The 4GB model sells for $ 649 and the 8 GB has a ticket price of $ 799. Amazon’s Kindle 2.0 and the larger Kindle DX (which is probably a closer fit to the Que) sell for $ 259 and $ 489 respectively. The 4GB model has sufficient memory for around 35,000 documents. The 8GB model will hold 75,000 documents – equivalent to 75 filing cabinets.

According to Plastic Logic, the Que is “more than an eReader”. It features an enormous 10.7 inch shatterproof display – the largest in the world at this time. Apart from the size, the display is notable for the fact that it is made of plastic rather than glass. This means that it is more durable, lighter and surprisingly flexible.

The overall dimensions of the device are 8.5 X 11 X 0.33 inches and weighs less than a typical periodical – one pound roughly. It is quite similar to carrying a pad of letter sized paper around with you.

Although they maintain that it is more than an e-book reader, Plastic Logic have forged a partnership with Barnes and Noble who will supply books for the device. Partnerships with newspapers, for example USA Today, are also in place.

Barnes and Noble will make 700,000 books available for Que users. Amazon currently have around 400,000 Kindle books available for their Kindle reader – but this selection is increasing at a rate of over 500 titles daily.

The Que will commence shipping around mid-April 2010. Customers can buy it from either the Que website or from the Barnes and Noble website. It’s not easy to tell if Amazon will be at all worried by this latest development. It could be that the Que really is more than an e-book reader - in which case the two devices will be competing in different markets. On the other hand, if they do wind up competing for the same customer base then, even without the price advantage that the Kindle enjoys, Amazon probably have good reason to feel quietly confident that their Kindle family will be able to see off this latest “Kindle Killer”.

USB turntables are marvellous devices, particularly for those amongst us who even now own our record collections.  By means of a USB turntable, you can transfer those timeless vinyl albums onto your PC and store them as digital files, as well as burning a CD duplicate for your own private use.

They’re a great object for music fans who need to sell their vinyl or get rid of it to make space at home, but desire to keep hold of the immortal songs they grew up with.  I am one of those folks, in actual fact.  In my accumulative years I picked up a big number of vinyl albums as the format died out.  Now, those albums were just taking up room and thus transferring them to my PCs thru a USB turntable made complete sense, as I could then make room around the house whilst not losing the music.

Additionally, lots of the USB turntables that are presently obtainable can without difficulty be connected up to a regular stereo system for magnificent playback of your vinyl albums thru your most important system, and you may very well find that they perform this job at a much superior plane than your old turntables.  Complete with software drivers aplenty, you can also hook them up to other players and digitize your cassettes, different analogue audio sources and even the classic vinyl 78s.

These devices are a great benefit to the hobby of any true music enthusiast who misses that unforgettable way their ageless vinyl albums sound, but does not want to be forced to deal with untrustworthy records or an elderly stylus.  Plus, they’re a brilliant idea to help preserve older recordings for aged family members to take pleasure in once more.

LED HDTVs For Your Contemporary Habitat

LED HDTVs are a most appealing option for any  family who would like to improve their house  entertainment system. The  increase in  interest in LED HDTVs in modern times has been little  short of astonishing. Thanks to the years of notice the public  has had leading up to the great big swap from analogue to digital  TV broadcasts, homes all over the globe have been welcoming  enormous black rectangles into their midst and discovering  what these splendid televisions  are capable of.

There was actually some  hullabaloo when LED televisions came onto the  marketplace, based on the identification of these TV sets as LED devices.  In reality they’re comparable to LCD TVs in that they  contain liquid crystal displays.

The distinction is in the way they are  illuminated. An LED TV has the same display arrangement as a  common LCD TV, but the  distinction lies in the fact that they are  lit by light-emitting diodes, which gives them even more clarity.  Thus there was some  argument over the manner these televisions  are named and advertised.

The main point is that a decent LED TV can offer you the  buyer a much improved viewing experience, and that  is, after all, thee entire point of the HD transformation in the first place.  Technology is advancing, and so are the requirements of the  general public along with it.

But what exactly are the benefits of LED HDTVs? They are adept of greater contrast, they can be  especially thin indeed, the onscreen colours are richer and they devour a reduced amount of power. Energy efficiency is a very significant factor indeed when  thinking about such an investment for your home.

Fortunately, there are various  superb special  offers from physical retailers and online outlets alike for  consumers to take advantage of, which means you can get hold of one of these  superb LED HDTVs for your family house at a  lower charge right now. While discount LED HDTVs are still something of a indulgence item, you will be  astonished at the difference they can  create to your leisure.

Dad buys Sat Nav

The Sat Nav has such been purchased by my dad, I give the final verdict. Although he luckily got it through his company for free we have had a few teething problems with the Sat Nav itself.

The product is a brilliant idea for anyone who is bored of getting out a map at every corner or perhaps on the verge of a divorce because the wife is still giving out the wrong directions. There are a couple of times that the Sat Nav took us in the wrong direction and then decided that it was out fault so told us to turn around post haste. On one occassion the crazy contraption tried to lead us into a road that wasnt even there.

Another bad yet amusing issue is that he insists on using it for everything, even the easiest of trips now take longer while we wait for he crazy Sat Nav woman to tell us the way. I

On the other hand the product can come in very useful if you purchase one that can be used in other countries. Sometimes it can be nice to hear directions from a person who speaks english when you are abroad and providing it points you in the right direction it can be useful for that.

Replacing them is not easy either which is why some form of Sat Nav Insurance will need to be taken out to avoid nasty replacement costs. Of course you could get gadget insurance as this actually sets out to cover you against other things like phones and games consoles. Perhaps it is an idea not to take out that extra mobile phone insurance

Gifts For Your Petrol Head Male or Female Friends

Auto gadgets and gismos are big business these days. There are literally thousands of different add-ons and build-ins that people can get for their cars these days, some very clever and others just ridiculous. Below are some details of four fantastically new guys and girls car toys.

Variable heated seats. Drivers and passages are more concerned with car comfort than they have ever been before, especially when it comes to keeping warm. You’ve been able to get heated seats in your car for some time now, but only vary recently have you been able to get car seats that can target specific areas with their heat. For example, you might have a sore point on your back you want heating up, but you don’t want your legs to be too hot, well now that’s possible. These make great Christmas presents also as they are perfect for winter months.

360 TV. Men and TV go very well together. Watching the latest episode of Friends though, whilst heading down the highway is not really a good idea as it makes it very difficult to keep and eye on what is going on. They need not suffer any longer though, as now you can get CCTV of 360 degrees around the car routed in to the dashboard from cameras mounted very subtly all around the exterior. It is now even easier then to park your car or check out hot girls on the sidewalk.

Beauty mirror
. Probably more gifts for girls these things, rear-view mirrors that flip over to reveal a magnifying mirror, perfect for checking the makeup and applying lipstick. We don’t advise you use these whilst driving however, regardless of how important your date is.

Multi-sound horn
. What man doesn’t dream about having a porsche in the garage or an air force helicopter in the garden. In reality, these cost a fortune and are highly impractical, so they are much better off enjoying a sound effects horn. These super gifts for men can replicate over 100 cool sounds, including explosions, super car sounds and animal noises. You have to be careful about the legality of these devises depending on where you are, but even if you just sit in your driveway scaring your dog, they’re still great fun.

Will 2010 See The Launch of A New Kindle?

This has been a huge year for e-book readers – largely due to the efforts of Amazon. Amazon launched the Kindle 2 in February 2009, which was an enhanced and updated version of the original Kindle which was launched in November 2007.

In June of 2009, Amazon released the Kindle DX, a large display version of the Kindle 2. It was specifically targeted at readers of newspapers, magazines and academic textbooks – and it created a bit of a stir.

The possibilities for use in the academic environment – from interactive textbooks to constantly updated texts, and not overlooking the potential for academic bodies to save a lot of money – attracted plenty of attention. As well as signing agreements with a number of colleges and universities, Amazon got a lot of free publicity from political entities such as the New Democratic Leadership Council and even Arnold Schwarzenegger, in his role as Governor of California.

Thanks to Amazon’s foresight and innovation – helped by all the free publicity – the Kindle reader has now become Amazon’s top selling product. Currently, the Kindle enjoys an impressive 60% share of the U.S. e-book reader market and recently released an international version. The Kindle has become virtually synonymous with e-book readers.

It’s probably worth remembering that Amazon were, in fact, a somewhat tardy entrant to the e-book reader market. The original dedicated e-book reader is generally held to be the Franklin eBookman, which was launched in 1999 – ten years ago. The Sony PRS reader was launched in 2007, prior to the release of the original Kindle.

Amazon may not have been first to launch – but by combining clever marketing with technical innovation and addressing customer needs, Amazon has secured its current number one position. The large choice of books available for the Kindle on Amazon’s website and the wireless connectivity (with no monthly fee) were every bit as crucial to the Kindle’s success as were the technical aspects of the device.

Now that Amazon has – practically single handed – developed the market, it looks like every man and his dog want a piece of the action. Microsoft, Apple, Sony, Barnes and Noble, iRex, Asus, Plastic Logic – it’s a long list – each have their own readers ready for release or in the closing stages of development.

Amazon’s current unique selling point - wireless connectivity - will become the norm and Barnes and Noble will allow users of their new Nook reader the choice of over 1,000,000 titles. The new Daily Edition reader from Sony will let users borrow books for a predefined period from participating lending libraries. 2010 will probably see some industry standard e-book format agreed upon, which will allow users to lend e-books to family and friends or move them over to other readers if they wish.

At the moment, many industry watchers are casting their eye over the line up of new readers and trying to identify the Kindle Killer. All the same, Amazon has shown plenty of business acumen to date, so don’t expect them to give up their top slot without a fight. It took them less than eighteen months after the release of the original Kindle to launch the next generation Kindle 2. The DX was launched just a few months later. Amazon almost certainly has big plans for the further development of their e-book readers. Is it conceivable that the Kindle 4 will be the true Kindle killer and that could we see this launch sometime in 2010?

Top 10 Innovations in Watchmaking

Over the past few hundred years both clock and watch making have seen several major technological leaps forward.  From the early days of the humble spring powered clock we have come a long way to the hi-tech accuracy of digital watches and the sublime elegance of ladies designer watches. Here are 10 of the most notable innovations.

The spring powered clock - The spring powered clock was invented in Nuremberg, Germany in the early 1500s.This early breakthrough allowed the size of clocks at the time to be reduced in size that they could become a watch.

The tourbillon - The tourbillon is responsible for watches being able to keep time, despite changes in time. This was introduced by Louis Briguet in the early-mid 1700s.

Mass production - this was the big leap forward that brought the price of watches down, making them affordable to the man on the street.

Automatic winding - After overcoming issues with inaccuracy and the risk of damage from water and dust rolex introduced the shockproof silent automatic winding watch.

The first electronic wristwatch - this was introduced in 1957 where a battery replaced the mainspring. This paved the way for a variety of future stylistic innovations.

Quartz powered timekeeping - by 1969, movement sensor based timekeeping technology had become small enough to power a watch.Seiko manufactured the first one and decided to call it the Astron.Amazingly it kept accuracy to within an impressive 10 seconds per year.

The first digital display watch - this was produce in 1972 and was an expensive 18-carat gold watch. It wasnt long until much cheaper versions were manufactured.

The GPS wristwatch - the first GPS watch was manufactured by casio in 1999 to keep up with the growing technology industry.

Bluetooth - this is still a comparatively recent development, arriving as it did in 2006 with Seiko being the leader of the pack.Since then many other watchmakers have joined in with their very own versions.

Gadgets - these days watches are used as cell phones, cameras and even media players.

Do Not Use Your Mobile Abroad

about taking your mobile phone with you? The first thing I would say is don’t even bother and the second is that if you are then make sure you have phone insurance.

Reasons

One of the main reasons that you should not be taking your mobile phone with you is because it just gets in the way of everything and does not need to be with you. The thing is if you take your mobile with you then you are going to be calling the people that you miss because they are there on the phone to be called. The thing is it is still going to be there when you get back so if you are really that desperate to use a phone just use a pay phone. It will be cheaper than making the payment by your own mobile phone.

Another reason is the risk of roaming charges you could get if you accidently go on the internet when you are away. This is especially true if you have a phone like the iPhone as there was someone that clicked the net by mistake and got charged for a massive 00 dollars.

Although you could get gadget insurance for breakages abroad it will not cover you from the mistakes you can make from all of the browsing that can be done. If you are thinking about texting then expect a large sum of money to be taken each time you ty.

One of the main things that you can learn from this is that taking the phone with you is just not worth all of the hassle. If you are going on holiday then make sure you look into car hire insurance because at least then if something happens you are covered.
