What’s All The Fuss About The Apple iPad?

Are ebook readers about to be discarded in favor of the iPad? After the big launch of the Apple iPad, tech geeks are frantically pacing the floor, anxiously waiting for the time when they could at long last get their hands on this device. The iPad models equipped with WiFi are expected to be sent out by late March and the 3G models are to be delivered starting April. It’s no shocker actually; a person who uses Apple products are a rare breed, loyal and have stayed devout to Apple.

It looks like Steve Jobs still got his magic, creating a product which will be flying off the shelves, no doubt. Perhaps scores of Apple followers will meander in long queues at the nearby Apple Store, standing by for when the iPad will finally go on sale, reminiscent of the iPhone launch. But with all of the buildup surrounding the iPad, will it overshadow the popularity of other ereaders such as the Kindle and Sony Readers? In order to come to a verdict, let’s check out the iPad closely.

The device doesn’t come cheap with prices starting at 499 dollars and topping out at 829 dollars, and why wouldn’t it be more than a bit pricey? Bear in mind that the iPad isn’t just an ebook reader. It looks like an over-sized iPhone, minus the call capabilities. You can watch high-def movies, stream TV shows, browse the internet, and play games on it. The humongous 9.7-inch IPS touch screen stays true to Apple’s high resolution standards. It comes with a storage capacity of 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive.

With such storage capability, this device will no doubt hold a library much larger than your average ereader. Books are coolly displayed on a “book shelf”. You can just tap the book you would like, and enjoy reading it on a high-resolution, LED backlit screen. While most existing iPhone and iPod Touch apps may be used on the iPad, exclusive apps specifically developed for the iPad are expected to come out too.

Here’s a problem, however. The iPad will only be associated to Apple’s own ebook store, and these books are not compatible with the Kindle and other ebook reader market dominators. If you’ve got a wide collection of ebooks already on another ereader, you’ll have trouble reading them on the iPad. While it is still not confirmed as yet, rumor has it that iBooks will sell for 12.99 dollars and 14.99 dollars.

The Apple iPad is easily transportable, lightweight, and probably really fun to tinker around with. But if you won’t be in need all of the “other stuff”, the ebook readers on the market now will suit you just as well. But if you are a true-blue Apple fanatic, then Jobs and his group have manufactured yet another exciting product for consumers. With fantastic clarity and capabilities, you will “iLove” this multi-tasking gadget. The Apple iPad will match flawlessly with your MacBook Pro, AirPort Express, Magic Mouse and iPhone.

The Kindle Vs iPad - A Comparison

Presenting a side-by-side Kindle vs iPad review, which device will likely win hands down? Without a doubt, the Apple iPad, with its recent much talked about launch, is the “in” thing today. True-blue Apple consumers can barely wait to get their hands on one as the WiFi models are expected to ship in late March, and the 3G units are arriving in April. When that time comes, we will no doubt see long lines in front of every Apple store just like what transpired with the sale of the iPhone.

But what of the ereaders like the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader?  The ereader has slowly become a common consumer device, with the Kindle getting the lion’s share of the market. Seeing the promise of such a device however, a lot of similar ebook readers have also been released of late, with most of them sporting practically the same features as that of the Kindle. Now with the introduction of tablet PCs like the iPad which can also ably perform as an ebook reader, the gadget need may perhaps swing  to multi-functional devices. Can the iPad really make a significant dent on the ebook reader industry? Let’s weigh the significant factors.

First off, the negatives. The iPad will only be connected to Apple’s own ebook store. While getting an iPad is a smart move for those who are still considering buying an ebook reading gadget, if you already own plenty of digital books, you won’t be able to access these in the iPad. Actual ebook prices are still to be confirmed, but there’s word that purchasing iBooks in the Apple ebook store is going to run you around 12.99 dollars and 14.99 dollars. These rates can be a little pricey for those who have to start from scratch. Plus, Amazon’s ebooks are still retailing at 9.99 dollars apiece.

Notwithstanding, getting an iPad has its own share of benefits, as it’s a device able to serve many functions. You will be able to use this oversized iPhone lookalike, sans the “phone”, to view high-def movies, watch your favorite TV shows, do online browsing, and have fun with games on a 9.7 inch IPS touch screen. True to Apple standards, the clarity and color is amazing, and it comes with your choice of 16-GB, 32-GB or 64-GB internal memory. With such storage capability, the Library will hold a lot of books, which are ingeniously displayed on a “book shelf” design. With one simple tap, you can pick out your ebook, and read it on the high-resolution, LED back-lit display. Depending on your memory and connectivity preferences, prices start out at 499 dollars and end at 829 dollars. It does have special apps created specifically for the iPad, and you’ll have access to many of the 140,000 other apps at the App Store.

On the other hand, the Kindle is a device intended for the user’s most relaxing and easy reading experience in mind. Unlike the LCD screen of the iPad, the Kindle, like the present batch of ebook readers, utilizes e-ink display, which many say, is still best for reading for longer periods of time. The Kindle’s battery can last as long as two weeks without recharging, so it could also make the perfect traveling companion. The 6-inch model is priced at 259 dollars, while the 9.7-inch Kindle DX costs 489 dollars.

So which gadget gets our nod in this Kindle vs iPad comparison? Certainly for the gadget geek, the iPad will go perfectly alongside his MacBook Pro, AirPort Express, Magic Mouse and its smaller counterpart in looks, the iPhone. Jobs and his staff have created yet another brilliant product for the dedicated Apple user. But for the booklover just aiming to read in the most conjucive “environment” and have little need for all of the other fancy features, the Kindle ebook reader is still your best option on the market today.

Specialist Kindle Or Multi-Tasking iPad - Which Do You Prefer?

After what seemed, for many people, like a very long wait, Apple has finally unveiled their tablet computer. It’s called iPad and has received, somewhat predictably perhaps, a mixed reception at best. Some say that it’s no more than an oversized iPod Touch. Others predict that it will be the death of the netbook, the notebook and the e-book reader.

In particular, the iPad has, for a long time now, been predicted to be the “Kindle Killer”. Which is, in one way strange as the Amazon Kindle and the Apple iPad are two very different devices, and yet, in another way, somehow inevitable. When the iPad starts shipping in March, they will be the two hottest gadgets on the market. Furthermore, they are brought to market by two of the largest and most successful corporations in the world.

The Kindle is a specialist. It does one job, letting people read books, very well indeed. In addition to being a great e-book reader it greatly simplifies the process of buying and taking receipt of books very effectively. The iPad on the other hand is a Jack of all trades. Its color screen is great for browsing the web, playing games, playing video and, of course, you can also use it as a music player and access the vast library of Apple “Apps”.

There are a variety of reasons which explain why the Kindle is such an excellent e-book reader. One of the most important is its e-ink technology display. This provides the user with a reading experience which is very similar to reading text printed on normal paper and is much more comfortable than reading on a back-lit PC monitor. It also has a very low power usage requirement - so it can go for a long time in between charging. However, the e-ink display, which is a great strength for an e-book reader, is monochrome and relatively slow to refresh - which means that it’s pretty poor, or completely non-functional, for use as a web browser or video player.

The iPad’s great color display makes it perfect to surf the internet, watch video or play games. On the other hand, the back-lit screen produces more eye strain than the Kindle display and it has a relatively short battery life of only ten hours.

The fact is that the Kindle is far superior as an e-book reader to the iPad - but it is unlikely, even in its next incarnation, to ever be used as anything other than a backup web browser - suitable only for very occasional use. Apple’s iPad is very definitely a multi-functional device. Apart from its performance as an e-book reader, there will probably be other specialised devices that can perform some of its other tasks more efficiently. Whether you prefer a specialised device or if you feel that the much increased versatility of the iPad makes up for less than ideal performance in all areas will be the deciding factor in determining which device you choose.

The iPad is, quite frankly, not a patch on the Kindle when considered as an e-book reader. However, even after its next iteration (due sometime early in 2010 if the rumours are true) the Kindle will not be suitable for anything other than very basic and infrequent web browsing. Neither is it out of the question that there may well be other devices which can outperform the iPad in selected areas. The device you select will be determined by your readiness to trade off a (fairly) small amount of performance for a lot of versatility and the added convenience of a multi-functional device.

Gifts To Make Men Happy This Year

Every year it seems that people want the latest and greatest gadgets. 10 years ago everyone wanted a home PC or DVD player. These products are just about at their end of their life-span now and the next generation of quicker and more advanced tech is taking over. If you’re looking for the best gifts for men then you’ll need to get with the times and find out what is really in vogue right now.Below are some of the most desirable products that will be on the shelves in 2010.

Micro RC Helicopter. Its difficult to see what is so advanced about a micro helicopter when compared to the old larger modules, but believe it or not they are completely different. With remote control helicopters of old, you needed to break the bank to buy one and then you worried about crashing them as they were very difficult to control. You wouldn’t even dream of an RC plane as these were even worse. The micro helicopters however can be flown by a 10 year old and in a space the size of a small bedroom. These choppers do not mix well with pets however, and cats especially will like opportunity to test their bird hunting skills.

Next Gen Smart Phone. The last decade has seen phones transform from clunky and hard to use devices to loyal companions that we use to organise our everyday life. We can now browse the internet on phones, send and receive email, play games and even find our way via GPS.That said, these additions have been around for a little while now and there are even more advanced features just around the corner. Look out for more phones incorporating mini digital projectors, night vision recorders and even telescoping lenses attachments.

Netbooks. As with all gadgets, computers are getting smaller all the time. The laptop started to get so small that people decided to call it something new, and so the netbook was born. Admittedly they do slightly different jobs, but netbooks are becoming as powerful as laptops these days and so more and more people are choosing them as their primary computer. Expect netbooks to get even smaller and more powerful in future.

The Launch Of Apple’s iPad - Should Amazon Be Worried?

Apple has, after what must have seemed like an eternity to their adherents, unveiled their much anticipated tablet computer at last. The name is confirmed as the iPad, which took some pundits by surprise – earlier guesses included iSlate, iTablet etc. – and it’s fair to say that it has had a somewhat mixed reception thus far. There is always a certain amount of polarisation where Apple is concerned and that’s pretty much the case here.

Some reviewers have suggested that it is nothing more than an oversized iPod Touch. Others are much more enthusiastic and are already suggesting that we will see the disappearance of notebooks, netbooks and the Amazon Kindle e-book reader. The proof of the pudding is in the eating of course, and this will come when the iPad actually launches in March. It is difficult to imagine that it won’t be a huge success for Apple.

At the moment, the most commonly drawn comparison seems to be with the Amazon Kindle e-book reader. The two devices are very different – so it’s not necessarily a sensible comparison to draw. However, the comparison is almost inevitable when you consider that the Kindle has been the hottest gadget on the market for some months now and was itself often given the title of “the iPod of reading”.

Of course, the Kindle is a specialised device. It performs its primary function – allowing users to read books – very well and has a few supplementary functions, a basic web browser, a dictionary, receipt of newspapers and magazines etc., which it performs, quite frankly, less well. The iPad, on the other hand, is an extremely versatile device which performs many different functions. Unlike the Kindle it has a color display, which features touch screen control functionality and incorporates an accelerometer. That means that it’s great for surfing the net, ideal for video playback, an mp3 player, an e-book reader and all of the entire library of “apps” developed for the iPod Touch will operate on it. Expect to see some pretty funky games being made available shortly after the launch proper.

So should Amazon be worried that Apple is going to kill the Kindle reader off and eat into their profits? It doesn’t seem likely. Putting the hype to one side, there is actually a pretty big price difference between the two devices. Certainly, the price of the entry level iPad at $ 499 is only $ 10 higher than the current Kindle DX price. However, the entry level model doesn’t include 3G connectivity and there is a minimum $ 15 per month fee for the Apple device, which could go as high as $ 30 depending upon the size of your downloads each month. The Kindle includes 3G connectivity - and with no monthly fee. It’s quite probable that the iPad’s appearance on the scene could produce a downward adjustment in the ticket price of the DX – but this would have happened anyway.

One of the apps that many will use on the iPad will be the “Kindle app”, which basically allows users to read Kindle books on their Pod or Pad. It may be an opportunity for Amazon to increase the size of their potential market in this area. Apple will also have its own online bookshop for iPad customers – so there may well some degree of price competition going forward. If so, it will be the consumers who benefit.

When the iPad starts shipping in March, it’s a fair bet that a lot of enthusiastic customers will be making their purchases via the Amazon website. It will probably be a very nice sales spike for them.

So – Amazon will have the potential to increase the sales of Kindle books. It will also profit very nicely in its capacity as a merchant bearing in mind that the Amazon site will be the first place that many iPad potential buyers think of when it is time to make their purchase. The price of the Kindle DX will fall, which it would have anyway, but they will continue to sell in volume and Amazon will continue to profit. It’s a clear demonstration of exactly how robust Amazon’s business model is.

Is The Que More Than An E-Book Reader?

UK based company Plastic Logic has announced its Que e-book reader which will now compete with the Amazon Kindle reader. The lightweight device, which features touch screen controls was displayed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The Que is the product of more than a decade of research and development work at Cambridge University in the UK. It’s estimated that the R&D program cost in excess of $ 200m.

The devices features 3G wireless connectivity and has a large format black and white display. It is aimed at “mobile professionals” and is quite a bit more expensive than the Kindle.

There are two different models available. The 4GB model sells for $ 649 and the 8 GB has a ticket price of $ 799. Amazon’s Kindle 2.0 and the larger Kindle DX (which is probably a closer fit to the Que) sell for $ 259 and $ 489 respectively. The 4GB model has sufficient memory for around 35,000 documents. The 8GB model will hold 75,000 documents – equivalent to 75 filing cabinets.

According to Plastic Logic, the Que is “more than an eReader”. It features an enormous 10.7 inch shatterproof display – the largest in the world at this time. Apart from the size, the display is notable for the fact that it is made of plastic rather than glass. This means that it is more durable, lighter and surprisingly flexible.

The overall dimensions of the device are 8.5 X 11 X 0.33 inches and weighs less than a typical periodical – one pound roughly. It is quite similar to carrying a pad of letter sized paper around with you.

Although they maintain that it is more than an e-book reader, Plastic Logic have forged a partnership with Barnes and Noble who will supply books for the device. Partnerships with newspapers, for example USA Today, are also in place.

Barnes and Noble will make 700,000 books available for Que users. Amazon currently have around 400,000 Kindle books available for their Kindle reader – but this selection is increasing at a rate of over 500 titles daily.

The Que will commence shipping around mid-April 2010. Customers can buy it from either the Que website or from the Barnes and Noble website. It’s not easy to tell if Amazon will be at all worried by this latest development. It could be that the Que really is more than an e-book reader - in which case the two devices will be competing in different markets. On the other hand, if they do wind up competing for the same customer base then, even without the price advantage that the Kindle enjoys, Amazon probably have good reason to feel quietly confident that their Kindle family will be able to see off this latest “Kindle Killer”.

Additionally, lots of the USB turntables that are presently obtainable can without difficulty be connected up to a regular stereo system for magnificent playback of your vinyl albums thru your most important system, and you may very well find that they perform this job at a much superior plane than your old turntables.  Complete with software drivers aplenty, you can also hook them up to other players and digitize your cassettes, different analogue audio sources and even the classic vinyl 78s.

These devices are a great benefit to the hobby of any true music enthusiast who misses that unforgettable way their ageless vinyl albums sound, but does not want to be forced to deal with untrustworthy records or an elderly stylus.  Plus, they’re a brilliant idea to help preserve older recordings for aged family members to take pleasure in once more.

LED HDTVs For Your Contemporary Habitat

LED HDTVs are a most appealing option for any  family who would like to improve their house  entertainment system. The  increase in  interest in LED HDTVs in modern times has been little  short of astonishing. Thanks to the years of notice the public  has had leading up to the great big swap from analogue to digital  TV broadcasts, homes all over the globe have been welcoming  enormous black rectangles into their midst and discovering  what these splendid televisions  are capable of.

There was actually some  hullabaloo when LED televisions came onto the  marketplace, based on the identification of these TV sets as LED devices.  In reality they’re comparable to LCD TVs in that they  contain liquid crystal displays.

The distinction is in the way they are  illuminated. An LED TV has the same display arrangement as a  common LCD TV, but the  distinction lies in the fact that they are  lit by light-emitting diodes, which gives them even more clarity.  Thus there was some  argument over the manner these televisions  are named and advertised.

The main point is that a decent LED TV can offer you the  buyer a much improved viewing experience, and that  is, after all, thee entire point of the HD transformation in the first place.  Technology is advancing, and so are the requirements of the  general public along with it.

But what exactly are the benefits of LED HDTVs? They are adept of greater contrast, they can be  especially thin indeed, the onscreen colours are richer and they devour a reduced amount of power. Energy efficiency is a very significant factor indeed when  thinking about such an investment for your home.

Fortunately, there are various  superb special  offers from physical retailers and online outlets alike for  consumers to take advantage of, which means you can get hold of one of these  superb LED HDTVs for your family house at a  lower charge right now. While discount LED HDTVs are still something of a indulgence item, you will be  astonished at the difference they can  create to your leisure.

Dad buys Sat Nav

The Sat Nav has such been purchased by my dad, I give the final verdict. Although he luckily got it through his company for free we have had a few teething problems with the Sat Nav itself.

The product is a brilliant idea for anyone who is bored of getting out a map at every corner or perhaps on the verge of a divorce because the wife is still giving out the wrong directions. There are a couple of times that the Sat Nav took us in the wrong direction and then decided that it was out fault so told us to turn around post haste. On one occassion the crazy contraption tried to lead us into a road that wasnt even there.

Another bad yet amusing issue is that he insists on using it for everything, even the easiest of trips now take longer while we wait for he crazy Sat Nav woman to tell us the way. I

On the other hand the product can come in very useful if you purchase one that can be used in other countries. Sometimes it can be nice to hear directions from a person who speaks english when you are abroad and providing it points you in the right direction it can be useful for that.

Replacing them is not easy either which is why some form of Sat Nav Insurance will need to be taken out to avoid nasty replacement costs. Of course you could get gadget insurance as this actually sets out to cover you against other things like phones and games consoles. Perhaps it is an idea not to take out that extra mobile phone insurance
