A Brief Outline On MP3 Players

MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 or MP3 for short has become a common audio format that is deployed to transfer and playback music on digital audio player. It was designed by the Moving Picture Experts Group which included amongst others, Fraunhofer of Germany, Thomson-Brandt, AT&T-Bell Labs of USA, and CCETT. It obtained an ISO/IEC standard in 1991.

MP3 reduces the amount of data for recording and yet it maintains the original quality of the uncompressed audio. The MP3 can compress a CD file to one-tenth its size with a mid-range bit rate setting of 128 kbits/s. This compression is done by auditory masking. The first MP3 software encoder was released in 1994. The file extension name was initially .bit which was changed to .mp3 in 1995. Winplay3 was the first real time software released in the same year. Audio files began to be converted to MP3 files and played back in personal computers. MP3 soon spread on the Internet. The release of Winamp in 1997 and the Unix audio player mpg123 in 1998 further popularized MP3. By the later part of 1997, MP3 was being offered free at mp3.com. Peer to peer transferring of music files that are ripped from compact discs rapidly increased. Napster, launched in 1999, assisted large scale peer to peer file sharing. No doubt there was an outcry of violations of copyright leading to loss to recording companies. This was also followed by a spate of allegations and litigations.

MP3 players are of three types. They are the hard drives, micro hard drives and flash based MP3 players. The hard drive based MP3 players is heaviest and largest amongst them. Their capacity is as large as ten gigabytes and more, and is able to hold some 2,900 MP3 files. Similar to this is the micro hard rive based players but with lesser internal storage capacity and smaller size. Their capacity is only six gigabytes which can hold about 1,700 MP3 files. Both hard rive and micro hard drive based MP3 players come with rechargeable batteries. The most compact of them is the flash based MP3 players as it does not have any moving parts. They use very little power. Their internal storage capacity is also very low and range from 32 megabytes to only two gigabytes. With the introduction of WiFi connectivity, it became possible to download music from the Internet. The first such one that was introduced was Sandisk Sansa Connect MP3 player.

The unauthorized sharing of music files has been extensive and continues to this day. There are also a number of companies that sell music in MP3 format including Bleep, Xiie.net, Beatport, Juno Records, Amazon.com, eMusic and Zune Marketplace. Disputes on matters relating to patent and licensing over MP3 involve Fraunhofer Institute, Thomson Consumer Electronics, SanDisk, Texas MP3 Technologies, Sisvel S.p.A., Samsung Electronics, Apple, Alcatel-Lucent, Texas MP3 Technologies and some more.

For instance a French company, Archos, offers portable video players, digital audio players, personal digital assistant and digital video recorders. Archos released its Generation 5 series of portable media players in 2007. The series included Archos 705 WiFi 160GB .

The hard drive, flash memory or microdrive stores the data. Storage capacities have reached 32 GB for flash memory based PMPs and 320 GB for the hard drive PMPs. The PMPs storage capacity can be expanded and contents can be directly transferred from external devices with memory Sticks, Secure Digital card and CompactFlash. This provision is available in a number of players. The size of the screen ranges up to 7 inches. Resolutions too vary and go up to WVGA. The color depth is 16-bit but could reach 24-bit in some players. Touch screens are introduced and PMPs are increasingly coming out with this feature. Never Grow Up

My cute little and adorable kids love cartoons, and, why not admit it, so do I, and I’m no kid. We like spending our evenings in front of the TV, or laptop, and watching some new cartoons. They’re more into “The PowerPuff Girls”, while I’m more into “Dexter’s Laboratory”, so we tend to argue a little, but we eventually come to an agreement.

I used to watch Disney cartoons as a kid, and I have tried to share these classic movies with my girls, but they have always been fonder of Cartoon Network than of Snow White, so they have made me watch TV with them, but I must admit Disney cartoons are still my favorites.

They like watching cartoons so much that they asked me to get them something so they could watch their favorite episodes while going on trips, or on brakes at school. While I was against this at first, their sad faces got to me and I promised them I’d find something good. I decided to get them an mp3 player with video capabilities, and I had a lot of options.

I have checked all the models, and I finally decided that the sansa view 8gb mp3 is the best option. It is so easy to use, that any kid could do it, so I bought one for each of my girls. I loaded them up with all their favorite cartoons, and I made them a great surprise. When they unwrapped the presents, opened the boxes, and saw their new players, they were overjoyed.

Of course, now they don’t go anywhere without their new players. In no time at all they learned how to load cartoons and music on them, so I can watch my Disney films now, without having to argue with them. After I have uploaded some “Tom and Jerry” on their players, they asked for more, so maybe they’ll start enjoying Cinderella, too.

Getting Another Media Player

I’m addicted to my mp3 player, or better said, to the music that’s on it. I must have it with me at all times. I take it with me when I go jogging, and even when I go to the local supermarket. I have had no problems with it and its warranty has long expired, but I don’t plan on changing it any time soon.

Things don’t always go according to plan, however, and my plan of not changing it flew out the window, at the supermarket. Or should I say, flew out of my pocket, like my mp3 player did when the headphone cable got caught in something.

When I saw it break into pieces upon hitting the ground, I knew I wasn’t going anywhere until I got a replacement. So back I went again, straight to the isle I knew mp3 players were on. One thing that surprised was that none looked like my old one. They all sported color screens and were quite big. I had no idea what to choose.

I decided to go for the one that was currently on sale, the creative zen v plus 2gb , hoping it was a good deal. The lady at the cash register told me they had sold very quickly, and that I was lucky to catch one. I figured since people were so interested in it, it must be good. My player was a nice green color, that I really liked too.

I don’t regret my decision even for a little bit. It works flawlessly and music sounds much better than it did on my old one. So my misfortune was actually a good thing, since I found something better, at a much lower price than I payed for my old one!
