The Stun Gun Has Developed from a Cattle Prod to an Creatively Made Device

A stun gun is an extremely ingeniously made device that aids police when they need to restrain an unruly individual who fights back along with being perfect for personal protection. But where did the thought to create them come from? Read on to find out the stun guns history.

The plan originated from ranch hands about 60 years ago. In the 1940’s ranchers would use long prods to get their cattle to move where they needed them to go. Throughout the years it went through many changes to improve its effectiveness and also be used for law enforcement.

Throughout the 1970’s it was agreed upon that policemen could employ these cattle prods, or stun guns, as a type of self defense. Throughout the years a great deal of patents occurred that would permit patrolmen to take greater control of violent crowds or unruly suspects. This would authorize police to incapacitate someone instead of just sending them a small jolt.

In 1973, they designed an even better stun gun that was more effective than long cattle prods. It could be worn on a person and could also extend several inches so that application was easier and safer. Another big thing they were used for was to protect planes. If someone strived to take over a plane or begin a riot, they could employ the electricshock devices without fear of making a hole in the plane’s skin.

Now how does a stun gun work? How does it incapacitate someone? Does it make them unconscious? These electroshock devices affect the body’s neurological system which affects a person’s muscles. Simply, what it does is makes the person’s muscles temporarily not work. It uses up their energy so that the person becomes frail and can’t move. No damage comes to them when they are stunned and no injuries occur.

These weapons are less than deadly weapons and are a good type of protection and self defense. They have been around and have been employed for countless years as a kind of protection. Various models are new and enhanced, making it easy to fend yourself while officers can easily pacify a suspect.

Once used as cattle prods, stun guns are now used to protect the innocent and to safely bring in criminals.

Uses of a Stun Gun

A TASER is one of a few non-lethal weapons that are increasingly being used in place of weapons that deliver lethal force because they can be used to end disruptive or dangerous situations without causing permanent injury or death. A Taser is a weapon that shocks an attacker from a distance without you needing to be in direct contact. The weapon uses an electric current that causes the person to temporarily lose control over their muscles. This paralyzes the muscles briefly, an effect called neuromuscular incapacitation. These non-lethal weapons are often used by the police during altercations to prevent injury.

To deliver the electroshock effect to the intended target, the TASER works differently than a stun gun. A Taser allows you to keep your distance from an assailant; it shoots the electrodes out and away, making it unnecssary to maintain contact with the attacker’s skin. A charge of pressurized nitrogen shoots two electrodes from the Taser. It propels them the same way that a paint gun discharges paint pellets. After the electrodes have been shot, the air cartridge has to be replaced. The new cartridge posesses a new pair of electrodes for the next time the Taser is used.

The electrodes attach to the clothing of the target and deliver the electroshock. They remain attached to the main device with small wires that deliver the current. The electrodes are designed to help them to attach to clothing more efficiently. This keeps them in place long enough to deliver the current.

Once the current is delivered, the effects of the TASER are temporary. The intended use is to end a conflict rather than to cause any injury or ongoing incapacitation in the assailant.

Many police departments arm their officers with TASERS because they can subdue an assailant quickly when the use of deadly force is not warranted. Police Taser models are equipped additional equipment, like laser sights, that police can use during disturbances. Stun Guns are also carried for security. Though they aren’t legal in all areas, they serve as an alternative personal protection weapon to stun guns and pepper spray. Make sure you check your local laws before buying.
